Background

“As a Psychologist, I believe that clients at various cross-sections of their life struggles have much to teach us. I take a non-judgmental approach, with acceptance and compassion, to help individuals develop the motivation and skills to maneuver through life’s difficulties.”

Mr Tay has extensive experience working with adolescents, adults and couples across clinical, corporate as well as military settings, in the Singapore Armed Forces Counselling Centre.

Aside from a special interest in first episode psychosis, he enjoys working with individuals faced with affective disorders, anxiety, stress, trauma and relationship issues. He worked as a consultant psychologist to organisations over matters ranging from workplace issues to talent management. Eugene is trained to handle a suite of psychometric assessments for personnel selection and career development.

Eugene views psychological therapy as an opportunity for clients to share, reflect and process collaboratively with a professional through their psychological or emotional issues faced. Eugene adopts a person-centric and empathic approach in helping clients identify means to work toward their therapeutic goals. His interpersonal style is a balance between warmth and supportive with that of being authentic and direct. He utilises a variety of evidence-based techniques which include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Mindfulness. Other approaches include Motivational Interviewing, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR).

In addition to treating clients, he also provides supervision to counselling and psychology students. Prior to joining private practice, Eugene worked for over 10 years in the public sector where he treated individuals who were grappling with a broad spectrum of conditions ranging from adjustment difficulties to first-episode psychosis.
