Hello everyone, my name is Dr Livia Teo. I am a Senior Consultant Opthalmologist with Nobel Eye & Vision Centre. I see general eye conditions for both adults and children including diseases like cataract, glaucoma, and myopia.

How can I tell if my eyes are in good health?

0:20

We should not assume that simply because we do not experience any visual problems that our eyes are in good health. There are many fairly common diseases but they’re serious, that can actually cause problems like glaucoma.

Glaucoma can cause vision loss and it’s only very late into the disease do we feel that something is wrong.

What are some of the common practices that may be harmful to our eyes?

Going outdoors without adequate UV protection is also potentially damaging to our eyes. It can cause a rapid development of cataract or pterygiums which are fleshy growths that develop on the whites of our eyes. Apart from that, it can also cause the development of eyelid cancers which are dangerous as well.

Poor contact lens hygiene is also a problem seen. Some of our patients sleep or swim with their contact lenses on or wear them for more than 8 hours a day. If we do not use the proper contact lens disinfecting solution, it can also cause problems with our contact lens wear.

Eye rubbing is also not a good habit. It can cause thickening of the eyelid skin and unnecessary pressure on the eyeball. Apart from that, it can also cause disruption of the internal structure of the eye.

Can we revert our eyesight back to normal without professional help?

When we experience a little blurring of vision or even when there is a little bit of itch, dryness and redness, we can always purchase over-the-counter eyedrops to use. Usually if these are mild symptoms, they will get better with these drops and we will not need to seek professional help.

However, if these symptoms persist for more than a week, we should definitely see our eye doctor for an eye check.

A healthy and balanced lifestyle and diet is very important. Our diets should consist adequate amounts of Vitamins A, C, E and minerals Zinc as well as Lutein.

Good contact lens hygiene is also very important, and this includes not swimming or sleeping with our contact lenses, wearing our lenses for less than 8 hours a day, as well as cleaning our contact lenses with the correct disinfecting solutions.

A thorough eye check is recommended for those who have any eye problems or visual problems. If there is a family history of any eye issues, you should also seek professional help. In some situations when you don’t experience any problems at all, you should also go for an annual eye check especially if you’re over the age of 40 years old.
