For many Muslims, the pilgrimage to Mecca is more than a journey. It is a time to reflect, reset, and fulfil one of the most meaningful commitments in faith. As the days of Hajj draw near, preparations often focus on travel and rituals. Yet looking after your health is just as important as everything else you’re planning for.

This year’s Hajj takes place from 4th to 9th June, during the 8th to 12th day of Dhu al-Hijjah. With millions expected in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, the chances of catching common infections naturally increase. To manage this, the Saudi Ministry of Health requires all Hajj pilgrims to receive the meningococcal vaccine. In line with this, the Ministry of Health (MOH) in Singapore has also made Influenza and Covid-19 vaccinations mandatory. Proof of all three must be shown before departure, forming part of the official travel requirements.

So why are these vaccinations necessary, and what else should you know before making the journey?

Why Vaccinations Are Essential for Hajj Pilgrims

In addition to Saudi Arabia’s existing entry requirements, the MOH has issued updated vaccination guidelines for those travelling from Singapore to Mecca. These steps are in place to support safe travel and protect the well-being of pilgrims during this period of high movement and shared spaces. Proof of vaccination is required before departure and forms part of the official process.

Here’s what you’ll need to complete before you go:

Meningococcal Vaccine

This vaccine is part of the core requirements set by the Saudi Ministry of Health for all pilgrims visiting Mecca. It protects against meningococcal disease, a serious bacterial infection caused by Neisseria meningitidis that can lead to life-threatening conditions such as meningitis. The risk of exposure increases in mass gatherings, where prolonged contact and close quarters are expected. To meet the official health requirement, Hajj pilgrims must receive the quadrivalent vaccine, which covers four strains: A, C, W, and Y. It must be taken at least 10 days before travel, and proof of vaccination must be included in your travel documents from Singapore.

Influenza Vaccine

Influenza might be common, but during Hajj, the impact can be far more disruptive. Long days of physical activity, little rest, and close contact with thousands of other pilgrims create the best conditions for flu viruses to spread more easily. To reduce this risk, the MOH requires all Hajj pilgrims from Singapore to receive the influenza vaccine before flying to Mecca. The time to take the flu shot must be within 12 months of your travel date and recorded in your vaccination documents. Because flu strains change every year, the influenza vaccine is updated regularly to target those expected to circulate. This jab helps protect your health and reduces the risk of passing flu to others throughout the journey.

Covid-19 Vaccine

Covid-19 might not dominate headlines these days, but the risk of infection remains, especially in large gatherings like Hajj. Travelling to Mecca involves long hours, shared spaces, and close contact with other pilgrims, all of which increase the chances of exposure. In line with these concerns, the MOH requires all Hajj pilgrims from Singapore to fulfil one of three conditions: receive the updated Covid-19 vaccine for the 2024 to 2025 period, complete the primary series, or show proof of recovery from a confirmed case in 2024. Completing this step before departure helps reduce the risk of illness and supports a safer pilgrimage for everyone making the journey.

Tip: It is also advisable to carry both printed and digital versions of your vaccination records. This includes showing your immunisation records through the HealthHub app, which might be requested at immigration checks upon arrival in Saudi Arabia.

Travelling to Mecca? Make Sure Your Vaccinations Are Sorted!

Preparing for a pilgrimage involves more than just making travel arrangements. It’s a commitment that requires physical readiness, mental focus, and a steady heart. Looking after your health is part of that preparation, and vaccinations play a key role in helping you stay well throughout the journey. However, do note that some vaccines take time to work, and it might become harder to book appointments as your trip to Mecca gets closer. By taking care of this early, you give yourself the freedom to prepare with a clear mind and fewer worries.

To support that, you can get your required vaccinations at our clinics across Singapore. Just bring your identification and any previous records so everything can be properly updated. If you're unsure where to begin, the team at Healthway Medical is here to guide you through each step, so you can focus on your preparations with confidence.

This applies if you're planning for Umrah as well. The timing might differ, but the nature of travel and the health risks are similar. Taking this step early helps you begin your journey feeling prepared, grounded, and ready for what lies ahead.
